New BOM
A Bill of Materials is the recipe for a manufactured item — every component, how much of it, where it is drawn from and which work centre handles it. Define it once and every work order for that item knows what to issue, so nobody rebuilds the list by hand each time.
Where to find it
Go to Manufacturing > New > BOM.
Adding a New BOM
- Select a manufacturable item — the item this BOM is for.
- Add components, one at a time:
- Choose the component from the list.
- Choose the location it will be drawn from.
- Assign it to a work centre.
- Enter the quantity required.
- Click Add New to save the component.
Adding Multiple Components
After the first component the screen switches to the component list, where the rest are added.
| Column | Description |
|---|---|
| Code | The component's item code. |
| Description | What it is. |
| Location | Where it is drawn from when issued. |
| Work Center | Which work centre uses it. |
| Quantity | How much is needed for one unit of the finished item. |
Quantity is per unit of the finished item, not per work order. A BOM calling for two of a component produces a requirement of twenty on a work order for ten.
Copying a BOM to Another Item
Use Copy BOM to Another Manufacturable Item at the bottom of the screen and pick the target item. The whole component list is copied across, which is much faster than rebuilding it for a product that differs in only one or two parts.
Getting the locations right
A component's location decides where stock is taken from at issue time. If it points at a warehouse that never holds that part, the issue fails for lack of stock even though the part is sitting elsewhere. Set the location to where the material actually lives.
