System Updates and Version Upgrade
When the ERP's code moves ahead of a company's database, that company needs its pending database changes applied before it can be used. Rather than logging everyone out and making them wait for an administrator, the ERP offers the upgrade to whoever hits it, so work is not held up because nobody with the right access is around.
What you see
A signed-in user opening a page on a company whose database is behind the code is shown an Update now prompt instead of the page. Running it applies the pending changes for that one company.
What running it does
| Step | Detail |
|---|---|
| The pending changes are identified | Only those this company has not had. |
| A lock is taken for that company | Two people pressing it at once cannot both run it. |
| The changes are applied | Long changes are allowed the time they need and are not abandoned if the browser is closed. |
| You return to what you were doing | Once the company is current. |
It uses the same engine the platform's own updater does — the same changes, applied in the same order, with the same results.
When it falls back to waiting
The ERP shows System under update, please wait instead of offering the upgrade when:
- An update file has not been deployed to the server yet.
- An update errored part way.
Both mean the platform has to deal with it, and offering an update that cannot succeed would only produce a loop.
Code behind the database
The gate works in both directions. Where the database is ahead of the code — after a rollback, for instance — running the changes would be wrong, so the ERP does not offer to. That case waits for the platform to bring the code back up.
An upgrade prompt is not a fault. It means your company is on a version that has moved on and the database has not caught up yet. Running it is the normal response; it takes as long as the changes take, and for a large company that can be several minutes.
