Departments are the second level of dimension. They sit beneath branches, so a transaction can be tagged to a team or function as well as a site — which is what lets you see whether a cost belongs to sales, service or administration rather than only to a location.
Where to find it
Go to Departments in the dimensions module. The screen appears only when the second dimension level is enabled in Company Setup — one level gives branches alone.
What the list shows
| Column | Description |
| Code | The short reference for the department. |
| Name | Its full name. |
| Branch | The parent branch it belongs to. All Branches shows every department. |
| Status | Active or closed. |
Adding a department
| Field | Required | Description |
| Code | Yes | A unique short reference. |
| Name | Yes | The department name. |
| Branch | Yes | The parent branch. A department without a branch cannot roll up into anything. |
| Start Date | No | When it was created. |
| Memo | No | Notes. |
Keep the department list short. Every additional department is another field someone has to get right on every transaction, and a tag that is often left blank produces reports that quietly understate the unit it belongs to.
