Budget Entry
A Budget Entry records planned figures against ledger accounts, period by period. Budgets do not post to the ledger — they sit alongside actuals so reports can show what you expected next to what happened.
Where to find it
Go to General Ledger > New > Budget Entry.
Field reference
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Account Code | The ledger account being budgeted. |
| Financial Year | The year the budget applies to. |
| Period | The period within that year. Budgets are set per period, not as one annual figure. |
| Amount | The budgeted value for that account and period. |
| Branch / Department | The organisational unit the budget belongs to. |
| Dim. incl. | Whether dimensional postings are included in the comparison. |
Working with an existing budget
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Get | Loads the existing budget for the selected account and year, so you can review or amend rather than starting over. |
| Last Year | Brings last year's figures in as a starting point — usually the fastest way to build a budget. |
| Delete | Removes the budget for the selected account and period. |
Budget by period rather than spreading a year evenly. A business with seasonal trade compared against a flat twelfth of the annual figure looks alarming in the quiet months and comfortable in the busy ones, when neither is true.
What a budget does and does not do
- It does not post to the general ledger and does not affect any balance.
- It does appear alongside actuals in budget comparison reporting.
- It can be revised at any time — a budget is a plan, not a transaction.
