States/Province

States/Province

States and Provinces are reference data used in addresses and, in several countries, in tax. Where tax is levied at state level — GST in India being the clearest case — the state on a transaction decides how tax is applied.

Where to find it

Go to Setup > Company > States/Province, then Add New.

Field reference

FieldRequiredDescription
CountryYesThe country the state belongs to.
NameYesThe state or province name as it should appear in addresses.
ISO2NoThe two-character code for the state, used in tax reporting and integrations.
Latitude / LongitudeNoCoordinates for mapping and distance calculations.
For Indian companies the state is not cosmetic. Whether a sale attracts CGST and SGST or IGST is decided by comparing your state with the customer's, so an incorrect state produces an incorrect tax split on the invoice.
