E-Way Bills
An e-way bill accompanies goods in transit above the threshold, carrying what is moving, from where to where, and in which vehicle. The ERP generates it from the document the goods are moving on, and handles the cases that catch people out — multiple vehicles, transfers between your own locations, and goods coming in from a supplier.
The kinds
| Kind | For |
|---|---|
| Generate | An outward movement on a sales document. |
| Supplier | An inward movement from a supplier. |
| Transfer | A movement between your own locations. |
| Multi-vehicle | One consignment split across vehicles. |
| Group | Several documents moving together. |
Distance
Distance drives the bill's validity period, so it has to be right. The portal will work it out from the two pincodes if you leave it as automatic.
A movement within the same pincode sends 1 km rather than 0. Zero means "work it out" to the portal, so a genuinely local delivery would otherwise be read as a request to calculate rather than as the short distance it is.
What an e-way bill needs
| Needed | Where it comes from |
|---|---|
| HSN codes on every line | HSN/SAC Codes. |
| Both parties' GSTINs | The customer or supplier record. |
| Both addresses with pincodes | The party and location records. |
| Vehicle and transport details | Entered when generating. |
Most failures are one of the first three missing rather than anything about the movement itself.
Job work
Material sent to a job worker and received back is a movement like any other, and e-way bills are generated for job work challans and receipts. See Job Work.
Managing bills
The E-Way Bills tab lists what has been generated, with its status and validity. Each call to the portal is paid from credit — see e-Invoice API credit.
