ZATCA Tax Categories
ZATCA classifies every invoice line by tax category, and where a line is not taxed it wants to know why, using a published exemption reason code. Tax Categories is where your own item tax types are mapped to ZATCA's, once, so that every invoice afterwards carries the right classification without anybody thinking about it.
The mapping
| Column | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Item Tax Type | Your tax type, as set up in the ERP. |
| ERP Exempt? | Whether the ERP treats it as exempt. Shown so you can see the two agree. |
| ZATCA Category | The category ZATCA expects for it. |
| Reason Code | The VATEX code justifying a zero or exempt treatment. |
| Reason Text | The wording that goes on the invoice. |
Save Tax Categories stores the mapping. The screen lists the common VATEX reason codes alongside, so the code you need is usually on the page rather than in a document somewhere else.
Why the reason code matters
A taxable line needs a rate. A line that is not taxed needs an explanation — and ZATCA will not accept "no tax" on its own. Zero-rated exports, exempt financial services and out-of-scope supplies are all untaxed for different reasons, and the reason code is how the invoice says which.
A wrong or missing reason code is one of the commonest causes of a rejected invoice, and it fails at submission rather than when the item was set up — which is why this mapping is worth getting right before you go live rather than after.
Checking it against the ERP
The ERP Exempt? column is there so you can spot a disagreement. A tax type the ERP treats as exempt but which is mapped to a standard-rated ZATCA category is a contradiction: one of the two is wrong, and the invoice will carry whichever the mapping says.
When to revisit it
| Event | Why |
|---|---|
| A new item tax type is added | It has no mapping until somebody gives it one. |
| You start exporting | Zero-rated exports need their own category and code. |
| ZATCA publishes changes | Codes and categories are ZATCA's, not ours. |
Map every tax type you actually use, including the ones you use rarely. The annual export invoice is exactly the document that will be rejected at the worst moment, because it is the one nobody thought about during setup.
