Manufacturing
Manufacturing turns raw materials into finished goods and keeps the accounting straight while it happens. A work order records what you are making, components are issued against it, labour and overhead are added, and the finished item comes into stock at a cost built from everything that went into it.
The production cycle
| Step | Screen | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Define the recipe | New BOM | List the components an item needs. |
| 2. Order the production | New Work Order | Say what to make, how many, and by when. |
| 3. Issue the materials | Issues | Components leave stock and attach to the order. |
| 4. Add other costs | Costs | Labour and overhead join the order's cost. |
| 5. Receive the finished goods | Productions | The made item enters stock at its built-up cost. |
A BOM comes first. Without one, the system will not let you raise a work order against an item — the components are what the issue step draws from.
The three work order types
| Type | What it does |
|---|---|
| Assemble | Components in, finished item out, in one step. Costs are entered on the work order itself. |
| Advanced Manufacture | Issue, cost and produce are separate steps, so a long production run can be tracked as it progresses. |
| Unassemble | The reverse — a finished item is broken back down into its components. |
Set up before you start
| Setting | Why |
|---|---|
| Work Centres | Where operations happen. Components are assigned to one. |
| Process Types | Named stages of production, each with its own reference numbering. |
| Manufactured items | An item must be flagged as manufactured before it can be made. |
