UAE E-Invoicing in TamilAccounting: Tax Invoices, Credit Notes and Bilingual Prints

The UAE is moving business invoices onto a national e-invoicing network. Instead of a PDF or a paper copy, a tax invoice travels as structured data through an accredited service provider to your customer and to the Federal Tax Authority, and comes back with a confirmation. TamilAccounting now does this from the screens you already use: you raise the invoice as usual, and the e-invoice is checked, sent, confirmed and printed in English and Arabic.

Everything described here runs today on the e-invoicing sandbox, the test system, so you can try every kind of document safely before your own go-live date.

Why it matters now

The UAE e-invoicing programme is phased. A pilot opened on 1 July 2026. Businesses with revenue of AED 50 million or more are expected to go live from 1 January 2027, smaller businesses from 1 July 2027, and government entities from 1 October 2027, each after appointing an accredited service provider. Dates are set by the Ministry of Finance, so always check the latest announcement. What does not change is the work: every tax invoice and tax credit note must carry the right identifiers, VAT categories, item codes and totals, or it is refused. Getting your data ready early is what makes go-live painless.

How it works

  1. You save a sales invoice or credit note the normal way.
  2. TamilAccounting builds the e-invoice and checks it against the UAE rules first: TRNs, emirate, item codes, VAT categories, and that the VAT and totals match what your books posted. Anything missing is listed with a link to fix it.
  3. The document is sent to your accredited service provider, on request or automatically when you save.
  4. The status comes back within seconds (Delivered, with a unique e-invoice ID), or the reason it failed.
  5. The print becomes a bilingual Tax Invoice or Tax Credit Note, and an issued e-invoice is locked against editing and voiding.

Turning it on

1. Company Setup

Enter your TRN in the tax number field and switch on UAE e-Invoicing. While the switch is off nothing changes and the UAE e-Invoice menu stays hidden.

2. UAE e-Invoice → Settings

  • Sending: On request (a Send button on each invoice) or Automatically when saved.
  • Environment: the sandbox for trials. Production is switched on once your provider confirms your live account.
  • Company on the e-invoice: trade licence and issuing authority, address, emirate, IBAN.
  • API account: register the TIN, generate the keys and press Test connection.

3. UAE Setup checklist

The UAE Setup tab lists everything an e-invoice needs and does the missing steps in one go: the VAT 5% tax type and group, item tax types for zero rated, exempt, out of scope and reverse charge supplies, separate credit note numbering (an e-invoice number must be unique across invoices and credit notes), UN/ECE unit codes, the start date, and the bilingual print layouts. Steps already in place are left alone and nothing is deleted. A new company gets the same checklist as a step in the setup wizard.

4. Customers and items

Each customer carries its TRN, emirate and, where needed, its trade licence. An export customer is simply marked as an export. Each item carries an HS code (goods) or a service code (services), and its item tax type decides its VAT category. Both can be filled in many at a time from a spreadsheet: Item Codes and Customer Details under UAE e-Invoice → Settings.

What is covered

SituationWhat happens
Standard rated saleTax invoice at 5% VAT
Zero rated (exports, international transport)VAT category Z, rate 0%
Exempt (e.g. residential lease)VAT category E with the exemption reason
Out of scope onlySent as an out-of-scope invoice
Reverse charge (e.g. electronics to a registered reseller)VAT category AE; the buyer accounts for the VAT
Line discounts, invoice discount, freightCarried on the e-invoice; the discount comes off the VAT base
Prices including VATSplit into net and VAT on the e-invoice
Another currencyExchange rate on the e-invoice; the print shows VAT and total in AED
UAE buyer without a TRNCannot be e-invoiced: the buyer's TRN is required. Mark such customers Not e-invoiced, or let the setting skip every UAE customer without a TRN
Consumer (B2C) saleNot sent: outside the current scope
Credit noteTax credit note naming the one invoice it corrects, with the reason
Supplier e-invoices you receiveListed with the supplier matched by TRN; one click opens a purchase invoice filled from it

Worked example 1: a standard tax invoice

Blue Dune Contracting LLC (Dubai, TRN on file) buys building materials and installation:

ItemQtyUnit price (AED)Taxable (AED)VAT 5% (AED)Total (AED)
Steel Rebar 12 mm (12 m bar)4042.501,700.0085.001,785.00
Ready-Mix Concrete C40 (m³)8310.002,480.00124.002,604.00
Site Installation Service (hr)6150.00900.0045.00945.00
Total5,080.00254.005,334.00

After you press Send, the status reads Delivered within seconds and the e-invoice ID appears on the screen and on the printed Tax Invoice.

Worked example 2: an invoice discount

AED
Steel rebar, 20 × 42.50850.00
Ready-mix concrete, 3 m³ × 310.00930.00
Subtotal1,780.00
Invoice discount 5%−89.00
Total excluding VAT1,691.00
VAT 5%84.55
Total1,775.55

The discount reduces the VAT base, exactly as a UAE tax invoice requires; the UAE Setup checklist turns this behaviour on for you.

Worked example 3: an export billed in US dollars

USDAED (rate 3.6725)
Copper power cable drum, 2 × 1,851.60 (zero rated)3,703.2013,600.00
VAT 0%0.000.00
Total3,703.2013,600.00

The printed Tax Invoice shows the exchange rate and the VAT and total in dirhams, as UAE law requires for invoices in other currencies.

Cancelling an issued invoice

A delivered e-invoice cannot be edited or voided: the Edit and Void options disappear, and a direct edit is refused with the reason. To cancel it, open its e-invoice and choose Cancel with a credit note. The credit note opens already filled from the invoice with the reason recorded; send it and it is delivered like the invoice. Its print is a bilingual Tax Credit Note naming the original invoice, its value, the value after the credit and the reason. Each credit note corrects one invoice.

Keeping an eye on everything

The UAE e-Invoice dashboard shows what was delivered this month, what is in delivery, what needs attention and the VAT reported. The To Send list, the e-invoice register and a full audit trail of every exchange with the provider are one click away, and an e-mail alert goes out if an e-invoice ever fails.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to switch it on straight away?

No. Nothing changes until you switch on UAE e-Invoicing in Company Setup, and you can try everything on the sandbox first.

Will sandbox tests lock my real invoices?

Not for good. While you try the sandbox, a delivered test invoice is locked just like a real one, so you see exactly how it will behave. Switch e-invoicing off, or move to production, and those trial invoices can be edited again. Only production e-invoices stay locked for good.

What if an e-invoice fails?

The screen shows the reason, the document stays editable, and you can correct it and send it again. You are also alerted by e-mail.

Are consumer sales e-invoiced?

Not in the current phase. Customers marked Not e-invoiced, or, if you choose, every UAE customer without a TRN, are left out automatically; exports are still sent.

Can I still change how the invoice looks?

Yes. The bilingual layouts open in the invoice designer like any other layout.
