A Single item can have more than one units, which will be Purchased, and Sold with different units. We can also call it as unit mapping, by mapping several secondary units with the primary unit. Each and Every item has a Primary unit. and than we can add multiple Secondary unit to it. The Primary unit helps to keep the stock in our system and allows you to perform the Sales and Purchase through the Secondary units, Lets go with an example Pencil and we will have three units for pencil.
Piece is our primary unit. and we can able to define it while creating item into inventory. Which will be chosen from the drop down of units and it will be considered as primary unit in it.
Box - 10 Piece of pencils in a box, So if we sell or buy one box pencil, we will get 10 pieces in stock. with this stock, You can either sell in piece or you can sell it as box.
Carton - It consist of 12 box, which is equal to 120 pieces of pencils in a carton. So if you buy one carton of pencil, it will get you 120 pieces in stock, with this you can sell it in three units, (boxes, carton, pieces).
Let's create Inventory and see it.
And you can bring this Units in a drop down on the sales and purchases module. So you can get it workable in both buying and selling. Before that we have to create sales and purchase price for the item along with its unit.
Sales Price
While selling the same item in different units, the price will also get changed. We cant sell the same unit price for wholesales. so lets get the price along with units. and will bring that in while selling it.
Purchase Price
When you buy the same product with different suppliers. they will supply you the same product but the price may vary based on suppliers. and also along with prices based on units. The below screenshot will help you to understand it.
The Purchase Price will be used during the time of Purchase order and Purchase Invoice.
Let's try with purchase and check the stock.
And while checking the stock. it will comes with the Primary unit as like i told. so 120+10 = 130 pieces will be in the stock.
And now, we can sell this items in different units
Here possible with 13 boxes or 130 pieces or one carton, we cant do the sales more than the stock, if you allowed the negative stock, the system will allow you to perform more than it. so the 5 boxes means, 50 pieces sold.
And if you check the inventory stock it will be 80.
That's the way the system works with multiple secondary units and the primary unit for the real stock management. All the inventory reports comes through the primary unit.
